State Assemblyman Found Not Guilty of DUI Arrest

MARTINEZ – Jurors on Monday found Assemblyman Roger Hernandez, D-West Covina, not guilty of one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence in connection with his DUI arrest in the Bay Area city of Concord this year.

But the case isn’t over yet: The same jury was hung 6-6 on a second misdemeanor count of driving with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or higher. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said it will announce whether to retry Hernandez on the mistrial charge at a Sept. 17 hearing.

Motorcyclist Dies in Crash in Angeles Crest Highway Near Pasadena

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST – A 30-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision with a U.S. Forest Service SUV on Angeles Crest Highway, where he died at a hospital shortly thereafter near Woodwardia Canyon.

He was on his 2011 Triumph motorcycle he lost control for “unknown” reasons.  Both the rider and motorcycle collided with a U.S. Forest Service SUV, and the driver was not injured.  The cause of the crash remained under investigation by the CHP’s Altadena office.

The Yearly DMV Report Shows Decreased DUI Statistics

PASADENA- It is a fact that people are drinking and driving less, according to the a report released by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, DUI arrests are at their lowest total since 2005, while DUI accidents are at their lowest since 2006.  According to MADD and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, the NHTSA found that drunken driving fatalities fell to 791 from 950 in 2008.

These DUI statistics amount to a “17 percent” decrease.  According to the DMV, alcohol-involved crash fatalities decreased by 15.2 percent in 2010. More importantly, DUI arrests decreased by 6.1 percent in 2010.  It appears that California is fighting drunk driving.

The ignition interlocks have been shown to help decrease the drunk driving fatalities.  Since 1980, California has seen drunken driving fatalities drop by 38 percent.
